Relay Ops Tool Redesign
Redesign of an internal logistics dashboard used daily by warehouse teams to track shipments, inventory, and exceptions.
Relay is a logistics company coordinating high-volume shipments across multiple warehouses. Their internal operations dashboard had grown outdated — a patchwork of features layered over time, with poor usability and no consistent design system. They asked me to redesign the tool to improve efficiency, reduce training time, and bring structure to the interface.
Problem
The dashboard was essential for day-to-day operations, but it was slowing the team down. Tasks like flagging delayed shipments or updating inventory required too many steps. The visual hierarchy was unclear, and operators relied on custom keyboard macros and tribal knowledge to get things done.
Research
I shadowed a few warehouse team members over video calls to see how they used the tool. I noted common workflows, friction points, and workarounds. From there, I mapped out the core journeys: daily queue management, inventory adjustments, and escalation handling. These flows became the foundation for the redesign.
Design Process
I rebuilt the UI from the ground up with clarity and speed in mind. The new layout emphasized status at a glance, with color-coded rows, contextual filters, and batch actions. Tables were restructured for readability, and each record view showed only the most relevant info first — with secondary details tucked into collapsible sections.
A quick action bar allowed operators to complete common tasks without navigating away, and inline validation helped prevent costly input errors.
Systemization
I also delivered a lightweight design system tailored to internal tools: compact UI, minimal transitions, and a consistent structure for forms, modals, and tables. Everything was built in Figma, ready for handoff to their in-house dev team.
Results
After rollout, task completion time dropped by ~20%, and the team reported fewer errors in daily queue management. The new interface made it easier to onboard new hires and gave Relay’s ops leads a more reliable view into day-to-day performance.
Internal tools may not be flashy, but they’re often the most impactful. This one was a solid mix of systems thinking, practical UX, and visual cleanup.
